Why I love Daytona's road course so much, and why NASCAR needs to run  on it someday.

Technical corners with more than 90 degree bends, with room to work between them so you can get a good run for a pass. And then! And then, you get to let the engine sing for a bit and have enough speed for a draft without a stupid incredibly slow chicane before it all breaking up the drag race to the backstraight medium-speed chicane. To simplify it all, though, you get to work the corners and traffic and then let it fly on the banks for a while. A great time and a great track letting people pass and drive and use space. Enjoy a Mustang trans-am-series car pounding out a lap.

I wonder why NASCAR isn’t running the road course at any time in their schedule? They have Sears point Sonoma, Watkins Glenn, and....that’s it....really. II guess their front brakes wouldn’t handle 200-75 slowdowns twice a lap very well.

Have some real stock cars then.

;)

Agree but nascars fanbase would have cow if they did that. I was hoping they’d run the infield road course at Michigan. Our track sucks stupid generic tri oval.

But then we won’t have the big one and side drafts and all that other crap they claim is exciting.

The other two Daytona dates are so steeped in tradition that they would have to add a third date. I don’t think that would go over very well with other facilities. I agree though, seeing the Cup cars run the road course would be pretty cool. I’d say do the infield, but not the bus stop, and all is good. With the gearing change they’d have to make, the cars wouldn’t need 2 laps to get up to speed, so drafting wouldn’t play as big of a role.

I wish they’d add a road course or two instead of all the incessantly boring intermediate tracks. Oh look, a stretch of Autoclub, Michigan, Kansas, Chicagoland....blah, blah, blah. The product at New Hampshire and Phoenix is pretty awful, too.

IROC tried it in 2006. Looked like fun.

I think they should do what Indy does and run the road course before the 500. Throw some money on the table and make it an exhibition race.

There wouldn’t be an issue with gearing and speed, the oval cars get restricted down to 300+ hp, and the road course engines get their full 900. So they might actually need that bus stop.

There are a bunch NASCAR tracks with road courses. They should just switch a couple of those to the road course instead of running the ovals. The Xfinity race last year at Mid-Ohio in the rain was fantastic and silly, I loved it.
